Director’s Statement

Our perception of choice is often influenced and manipulated by society. We are expected to follow a specific life path, such as seeking love, getting married, and having children. Subsequently, we find ourselves trapped in the relentless cycle of the corporate "rat race," working tirelessly from 9 AM to 5 PM to afford a lifestyle that may be beyond our means. Unfortunately, this leaves little room for pursuing our dreams of leading a life aligned with our deepest aspirations. 

"Motherlode" revolves around Sam, a 26-year-old woman, who faces various struggles in her life—financial hardships, a cluttered apartment, and perpetual tardiness at work, which leave her feeling like a failure, lost, and unsure of her purpose. However, her life takes a mystical turn when she discovers a rainbow baggie containing edible flowers. Deciding to take a risk, she consumes the flowers and experiences a journey that hints at simulated drug use. This was intended to highlight plant medicine and psychedelic drug use as a method of expanding consciousness or essentially ‘waking up’ to living your dream life.

In recent years, plant medicine has garnered significant attention and scrutiny. The concept of the modern "psychonaut," or one who explores psychedelics fascinates me. Plant medicine has given rise to a generation of enlightened individuals who want to escape the ‘rat race’ to find inspiration and deeper understanding of the world. Sam's experiences with plant medicine lead her to challenge society's expectations and the choices that present themself. Set in the early 2000s, the film incorporates technology from my childhood, and was created with the intention of expanding your mind. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy!
